Associate Talent Management
We are committed to providing all of our associates with a well-defined road map for their career development and success at the firm and a holistic basis for recognizing and rewarding associate performance. We developed Core Competencies describing the behaviors and traits that top performers demonstrate as well as Practice Benchmarks describing the practice‑specific legal skills and experiences associates should accumulate as they progress. Development of the Competencies and achievement of the Benchmarks is supported by an extensive career curriculum, strategic use of pro bono opportunities and ongoing feedback.
Our Academies represent intensive two- or three-day training programs that bring together associates to share experiences, build relationships, broaden perspectives and networks, and most notably, build level-specific skills to support progress-to-mastery in our Core Competencies and Practice Benchmarks.
Our Practice Groups provide targeted training led by partners and senior associates to address changes in substantive law and practice group benchmarks. The Litigation and Transactional Practicums provide practical, hands-on training in areas such as negotiation and oral advocacy to broaden the mastery of skills required of top performers.
We offer online, on-demand training and development courses through internal programs via CE Manager and external programs via Practicing Law Institute (PLI) and West LegalEdcenter.
In support of their career development, all of our associates are assigned Career Advisors who serve as partner coaches and help identify and develop personal goals, action items and career plans. Ongoing feedback is also available throughout the year through our Project Feedback system.
Our Jump-Start Program integrates our first-year associates into the firm and supports the transition from law student to practicing lawyer.
We also provide associates with opportunities to work one-on-one with professional coaches to further develop practice management and business development skills.
